Dawson Local Harvest:  HAM's On Sale, Fresh Shrimp and Mucho Produce

Dawson Local Harvest for May 13th

The GREAT HAM SALE, Fresh Shrimp and Mucho Produce

HI EVERYONE!

Love this time of year, great weather and lots of great eats!

First up, FIVE HENS FARMS has their delicious free-range Ham on SALE for just $5.75 a pound! This is a very good price for some extremely tasty Ham. It’s a limited time offer, so get it while you can!

Next up, more Fresh wild-caught Georgia White Shrimp from Tom’s Awesome Seafood will be available this week. Again, we do not always have this, so take advantage while you can! Both are in the Meat section of The Market.

LEILANI’S has a pretty full slate of cool-weather Produce ready now. Newest arrivals include Bok Choi (aka Pak Choi), red and green varieties of Buttercrunch Minihead Lettuce (very tender and creamy baby head lettuces), Baby Carrots, Swiss Chards (green w. red stems and Peppermint) to go along with Turnips (red and white), Baby Georgia Collards, Kales (see the Kale Chips recipe below), and several varieties of other Lettuces. In the Vegetable section of The Market.

SEND A SUPPORTING THOUGHT out to Bruce Wills of MY DAILY BREAD who will be undergoing open-heart surgery this week. Naturally there will be no Baked Goods available for this Market.

Kale Chips

So easy, so tasty, and like potato chips you can’t eat just one! All you need is some of LEILANI’S delicious Kale, plus salt (seasoned, sea salt, kosher, etc.) and olive oil (drizzled or spray).

PREPARATION IS EASY! Preheat oven to 350. Wash Kale thoroughly, pat dry, cut the leaves off the stems and tear into bite-sized pieces. Use parchment paper or lightly spray a cookie sheet and place the Kale pieces on the sheet. Drizzle or spray the olive oil, salt or season as you wish, then put into the oven and bake until the edges are crispy and brown, about 10-15 minutes. THAT’S IT!

VARIATIONS YOU CAN TRY: Sprinkle with Garlic powder, Onion powder, Pepper, or shaken Parmesan. Be creative, the possibilities are endless.

THE MARKET IS NOW OPEN!

REMEMBER! You can now order until Tuesday night at 9pm. Pick up your order at Leilani’s Gardens Friday afternoons from 4 to 7pm.

You’ll find the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST at http://dawsonville.locallygrown.net

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible! We guarantee your satisfaction with all products in the DAWSON LOCAL HARVEST.

Have a happy and healthy week!

ALFN Local Food Club:  The Market Is Open!

ALFN Members,

As you may know, we have a few new growers who have joined the market this past week. I am excited about the value they will bring to ALFN and to all of us.

Old Boss Acres out of Hot Springs is a small farm that specializes in raising cows, sheep, goats, pigs and chickens. Check out all their listings in the meat section of the market!

Beyond the Greenhouse is a small farm with a flock of ducks. They specialize in selling duck eggs, but hope to expand to micrograms in the future. Check out those eggs!

Finally, Cedar Rock Acres is a two generation farm that specializes in cornmeal and corn grits. However, they also sell berries and a variety of vegetables and sorghum molasses. I know some of you have already purchased their grits and cornmeal.

Send us your reviews!

Backyard Permaculture II

Last week I introduced permaculture as a strategy to design ecological, stable systems that not only provide for the needs of humans but also benefit the environment. How does permaculture work? As a design process, permaculture is built on ethics of care for the earth and people with a demand to return surplus back into the system. It is tempting to jump from a quick definition of permaculture and begin talking about strategies and techniques. However, permaculture as a design process can have many applications from large scale farms to small backyards. Consequently, it is more important to clarify the undergirding process and principles of the framework. The principles of permaculture guide the design process. These principles are ecological in nature. When looking at your backyard, consider whether some of the permaculture principles could be applied:

1. All elements should have multiple functions
2. Diversity of elements brings resilience to a system.
3. Produce no waste
4. Catch and store energy
5. Use small and slow solutions

As you may be able to tell, permaculture is a way of viewing the world around you and finding ways to build systems of resilience and production. Consequently, permaculture looks at a backyard in ecological terms. What are the elements I need to have in this yard? How do these elements fit together? Where does energy flow through this yard? Are there ways I can catch this energy and store it? How can the wastes from this yard be recycled on site?

I’ll provide more concrete applications to permaculture next week. Admittedly, I’m only skirting the edges of this design process, but hopefully you have the basic gist. If you are interested in seeing how permaculture can design an urban plot, check out Paradise Lot by Eric Toensmeier.

Take care,

Kyle Holton

Siloam Springs, AR:  Online Market is Open!

www.siloamsprings.locallygrown.net

The outdoor market had a great turnout today and beautiful weather! The mild temperatures have been beneficial to our farmers and the early sowing of their crops. Herbs, greens, root veggies, strawberries, squash and zuchinni, onions, beets, turnips and daikon were plentiful today. Local, Arkansas honey is always available. There were lots of fresh, cut flowers just in time for Mothers Day! Farm fresh eggs, pastured pork(bacon, chops, ham, work loin, sausage, brats), pastured chicken(whole birds and cuts), and grass fed beef(ground, brisket, steaks, roasts, snack sticks) are also available. Loaf breads, cakes, pizza crusts, cookies, flat breads, cinnamon rolls, scones and muffins are baked fresh. Jams and jellies are made with love. Knitted and crocheted items are hand made and ready to be worn or draped on a chair or bed. Hand made soaps, bath teas and more in fabulous scents and homemade laundry detergent, deodorant, lip balms, and first aid creams are crafted by local makers. Beautiful art is displayed by a beautiful local artist who paints plein air while visitors observe. All types of plants are available from succulents to hanging baskets to roses. Local musicians are invited to play their tunes and today Sam Thompson joined us from Fayetteville. If you haven’t been by to visit yet this season make time to do so on Tuesday(3-7 pm) or Saturday morning 8 am to 1 pm.

The online market continues year round and placing an order online ensures you get the items you want. During the outdoor market season you pick the order up at the Welcome Station between 9 am and noon.

Be sure to like our Facebook page to keep up with events and what seasonal produce and fruits are available. Check out a great recipe using market ingredients that will be posted tonight!

Saturday, May 14th is our first Kids Day of the season! Joining us with great, free activities for your kids will be the Siloam Springs Museum, Benton Co Master Gardeners and The Romper Room with the ever favorite bounce house! The Kids Day fun begins at 9 am.

Have a great week and see you at the market!
