ALFN Local Food Club:  Best Turkey of all Time

OK. So my family came together for an early Thanksgiving celebration (plane tickets are cheaper, less Holiday craze; try it some time), and Falling Sky Farm was kind enough to sell us one of their turkeys a little ahead of schedule. My dad brined and roasted the turkey according to their recipe, and now I have to announce that this was the best turkey I have ever tasted. It was phenomenal. And this is your last chance to reserve a turkey! Do your family a favor!

I’ve also got a few good guides to greens here for you, recipes included. There are so many varieties on our market that it can be quite overwhelming. Hopefully these guides (Number One, Number Two) will help you make your purchasing decisions.

It’s also time to think about what locally grown goodness you want for your Thanksgiving feast. What you order now you will get next weekend, i.e., the weekend before Thanksgiving. We’ve got plenty of holiday staples: pecans, sweet potatoes, greens, ham, turkey, artisan cheese, honey, apples, artisan bread. I think it’s of paramount importance to feed you and yours the right kind of food on a day meant to give thanks.

Last but not least, I have two announcements from our grower community: (1) “Turtle Rock Farms is very sorry for the issue concerning their 1/2 chickens. TRF is out of chickens and tried to make them unavailable repeatedly, yet a software error kept making them available. The error was caught when orders were sent out to them each week. We were able to verify the error and have since deleted the item permanently. Lastly, TRF is out of all items currently and will not return to the market until 2013. Thank you for your support and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.” It was indeed a software issue, and we apologize for those of you whose orders were not fulfilled by no fault of Turtle Rock’s. And (2), from Chuck Crimmins, “just wanted to let the market know that after this week’s listing, we will be taking a two week break and recuperate!! We won’t list again until Sunday, December 2 (for pickup on Dec. 8) We currently have ~30 items listed, many greens, lettuce, sweet potatoes, etc. If folks are interested in our ‘Perry county’ organic produce for both pre-Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving day meals, this would be the week to order.”

So check out our market, order up and get some clothes with a bigger waste line ready!
Sincerely,
Sam Hedges

Champaign, OH:  Turkey Day Plans

Good morning locavores! After much discussion we have decided to close the market the week of Thanksgiving NEXT week so we wanted you think about your market needs THIS week a bit early. Do you have company coming or need to take a special dish to someone else’s home? Need extra milk for those scrumptious mashed potatoes or squash dishes? Be thinking of your needs now as the market goes live tonight at 8 and will be open til 8 on Tuesday evening with pickup on Thursday eve. We will be off next week so we can all spend time with family. If you get in a pinch and need product please contact the vendor directly to make other arrangements.

Another note about shopping locally…I am issuing another challenge to see how many of your holiday shopping needs can be found locally. Perhaps it is a gift certificate to a restaurant like Paradiso in Urbana that supports the local food system or one to Everyday Organics that stocks local products? How about the gift of Hemisphere Coffee beans to your Aunt Betty or even a gift certificate to our own Champaign Locally Grown to Grandpa Bob? Did you know you could gift money into a loved one’s account? Yep can do! Start thinking about how your dollars used locally stay local! Happy eating everyone!

Stones River Market:  The Market is Back Open - Thanksgiving is Fast Approaching

The Market opens back up this morning and Thanksgiving is not too far away. I want to let everyone know the pick up schedule for the week of Thanksgiving.

Murfreesboro – It’s easy. Nothing changes. Wednesday will still be the pick up.

Nashville – There will be NO pick up on Thanksgiving day. So if you want to order anything for Thanksgiving, it will need to be done this week.

This is your last week to pre-order your turkey for Thanksgiving from West Wind Farms.

Here are some messages and specials from our farmers and producers.

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse is running two specials this week. Buy 2, Get 1 free on all trade gallon pots of Perennials, Ferns, & Herb Plants from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse. Most are out of bloom now, but are strong, healthy plants, which will develop good root systems before cold weather. They are eager to burst into bloom in your garden next spring. Order your 2 plants as usual on the market, and in the comments section indicate your first & second choices of an additional free plant. Please be specific if there are 2 or more varieties listed (astilbe, carnation, etc.). Also, purple Wandering Jew hanging baskets are HALF-PRICE while supplies last.

From Mike with Ridiculous Chocolate: “As it gets closer to colder weather, our hot chocolate makes a great treat. One free sample will be added to any orders of our chocolate containers.”

From Catherine with Flying S Farms: “Any of my sweet breads will make wonderful desserts. Our breads and jams make excellent house warming gifts. We have added some new soups, jams and biscuits in time for the holidays.”

Thank you for your orders last week.

John
