Old99Farm Market:  Old 99 farm, week of Mar 20 2015

We’ve had some cold nites, below freezing outside, just down to zero in the greenhouse so little damage to the new seedlings. Growing food is getting trickier with the climate variability.

“Joel Salatin” the famous modernday permaculture farmer, :http://www.peakprosperity.com/podcast/97339/joel-salatin-promise-regenerative-farming was interviewed on Peak Prosperity recently. I’d say its worth reading or listening to. “I think that too often consumers take the convenient way out and say ‘Well, if farmers would just do things differently, everything would be better.’ The truth is that farmers have always followed the market. If people refuse to buy genetically modified organism food, farmers won’t produce it. It’s really that simple. It doesn’t take a government agent, a bureaucracy, a police state, a new law. I mean, all of this could be changed just by consumers taking a more active and aggressive role at financing what they say they believe in from the outset.”

The Family Food Freedom rally in Newmarket last week was successful in bringing out over 200 people to stand witness that we want the right to choose what food we eat. In the same week, General Mills (think Cheerios) announced it would be labelling GMO content on its food products, as already is the case with Campbells Soup.
West Virginia legalized cowshares for raw milk for human consumption. Slow progress.

Another reminder that fresh pastured lamb for Easter is an option. We have whole and half leg of lamb, bone in or deboned, chops, loin roast, shanks, ground, kabob, stew and organs. Am offering advance ordering for pork sides. If you want kabobs made up on skewers like in the photo, pls make order.

Egg prices reduced to $6.75 for jumbo, $6.00 for XL, $5.50 for Large. Getting lots of duck eggs now too.

Chicken broth will be a regular offering for the spring.

As of Mar 20th , we can offer the following crops: leeks, kale, chard, spinach, cilantro, turban squash, purple potatoes and arugula.

Camelia is cooking prepared foods from our produce: chicken broth, chicken casserole meat, apple sauce, stuffed peppers, cucumber relish, quiches (on order).

Healthy eating
Ian, Cami and Kazlyn
PS Kaz is growing oyster mushrooms here for the first time: now fruiting.

Princeton Farm Fresh:  The Market is Open

Once again the weather in Kentucky strikes again. I have only experienced weather like this in Nevada, where it was known to snow in June.
I wanted everyone to know about a great class the Caldwell County Extension office is putting on Backyard Gardening.
The class is on March 28th from 6-8pm at the Caldwell County Extension Office. Please call their office at 270-365-2817 to register before the 25th of March. It looks to be a great class for our community.
We look forward to seeing everyone on Friday,
Angela

Champaign, OH:  Dancin' In The Moonlight

We get it almost every night…
and when that moon gets big and bright…
it’s supernatural delight…
everybody was dancin’ in the moonlight…
(Dancin’ In The Moonlight- King Harvest)

An early morning post to the little local market of love! If you are awake, I urge you to go to a window, or venture outside, and look at the beauty of the moon…it was so amazing when I got up, way so early, and was having coffee before I started to bake.

The moon…I love the dark, clear skies, the twinkling stars, and the different phases of the moon. So comforting, so assuring, so mesmerizing.

Growing up in the West End, there used to be lots of backyard campouts, as all of us would put our tents up, and our parents would allow us to sleep outside, telling ghost stories, running the West End, through backyard games of late night tag, Ghost In The Graveyard, and generally running around like a bunch of crazy loons. Flashlight tag would result in all of our parents coming out to yell at us for waking up the neighbors. We would all settle down, tell ghost stories, try to levitate each other with the whole light as a feather thing, and then sneak off on our bicycles for late night biking on the country roads that surrounded the West End.

Good times…the highlight would be the moon and star gazing. I would sit while the others would be running around, and just stare, dream, plan, and scheme, while looking at the vast night sky.

The moon, this morning, reminded me of those carefree days, the coming of the warmer weather, and then my thoughts turned to…OMG…this weekend, with the time change, last weekend, is…EASTER!!

So, while thinking moonbeam thoughts, I also want you to think Easter thoughts!! Get your lists ready, get your orders in!! Will you be baking, grilling, entertaining, coloring eggs, making the whole dinner?? Will you need to serve breads, rolls, sweet rolls? Will you need a variety of meats for Easter breakfast, lunch, dinner? Eggs for coloring, eating, making breakfast casseroles? Maple Syrup and honey for Easter sweetness? Dried herbs and seasonings for all of the yummy Easter dishes to go along with the dinner? Eggs, flour, gluten free flours and mixes, for baking? Pies, cookies, candies, confections? Granulated garlic in all varieties? Jams, jellies, mustards, a bit of candied jalapeno…all to add to dishes or to serve alone? Milk for more baking, and drinking…my grandmother used to make us Easter Milkshakes! Don’t forget to give your home and yourself some love, too! Scented candles, soaps…all groovy for making it a lovely day…

So, go look at the moon, get your Easter list started, and don’t forget to order by 10pm, tomorrow evening!

Peace, Love, Good Vibes…
Cosmic Pam

Market News

Spring is now officially here, and the pine trees are celebrating up a storm. The weather didn’t get the memo, though, and it’s going to be mighty cold the next few nights. For a while, the forecast had us falling down below freezing, but that’s been revised upwards just a bit. That would have been a disaster for all the fruit trees that flowered a month early. Still, it’s going to be hard on all that tender vegetation. If you’ve planed any summer veggies in your garden, you’ll want to protect them as best you can this week. Most of Athens might escape frost, but it’ll happen here and there. Be ready!

If you’re still looking for seeds, or you’ve got extra you don’t need (especially seed you’ve collected yourself from open pollinating varieties), the 19th annual Old Timey Seed Swap hosted by Grove Creek Farm out in Crawford is just around the corner! Here’s more information:

“19th Annual Old-Timey Seed Swap: Join us for a casual potluck gathering and seed swap April 2nd 2016 from 1pm-6pm. With spring around the corner, we’re excited to share our plans for the 19th Annual Old Timey Seed Swap! Originally organized by the UGA Anthropology Department and Professor Dr. Bob Rhoades in 1998, this is a celebration of heirloom seeds, local food sources, traditional agriculture, and good conversation as folks share stories and swap seeds, plants, and bulbs. Why swap seeds? There are hundreds of varieties of heirloom seeds throughout the South with fascinating histories linked to families through generations of seed saving. Since the 1900’s however, thousands of varieties of heirloom vegetables, flowers and fruit have disappeared. Once lost, these varieties can never be recovered — their important genes and a piece of American history are lost forever. Swapping seeds helps preserve the varieties that remain so they can be used for agriculture for years to come – help save them!”

“So join us! Bring your heirloom seeds to swap, your questions or your gardening stories and knowledge, picnic blanket or chairs, musical instruments, or even a potluck dish to: Grove Creek Farm 10 Legacy Rd. Crawford, GA 30630. Potluck will be at 2pm this year. You don’t have to have seeds to swap – just come to learn how you can help. For updates please visit us on Facebook or www.grovecreekfarm.org. See you in April! NO DOGS PLEASE. Contact us for more information at dani@grovecreekfarm.org”

Thank you so much for your support of Athens Locally Grown, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. You all are part of what makes Athens such a great area in which to live. We’ll see you on Thursday at Ben’s Bikes at the corner of Pope and Broad Streets from 4:30 to 8pm!

Other Area Farmers Markets

The Athens Farmers Market opens in two weeks. You can find more information on their website. The Comer Farmers’ Market is open for the season on Saturday mornings from 9am to noon. Check www.facebook.com/comerfm for more information. The other area markets are also all closed for the season, I believe. If you know of any markets operating, please let me know.

All of these other markets are separate from ALG (including the Athens Farmers Market) but many growers sell at multiple markets. Please support your local farmers and food producers, where ever you’re able to do so!

We thank you for your interest and support of our efforts to bring you the healthiest, the freshest and the most delicious locally-produced foods possible!
