Do you believe the beautiful day today?!

Unfortunately we did get frost again on Wednesday last week, so the asparagus has really slowed down again and will probably not be available this week. Most of the offerings are from the Hoop House at Forest Run Farm. Kale has been added to the list.

Forest Run Farm is offering vegetable plants and herbs for sale. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, Tomatillos, parsley, kale and kohlrabi. They just started putting tomatoes in the field this past week, so there is plenty of time to get your garden going. Note: CSA punchcards are not valid for plant payment.

Check the list that follows for what is available. Pick up will be Friday from 4-6pm.

Herbs—Cilantro, mint, sage, oregano, fennel, and mixed herb bunches.

Eggs—Pastured, free range chicken and duck eggs.

Meat—Pastured beef, chicken, goat and lamb.

Fermented foods—Sauerkraut, okra, and jalapenos.

Salsa—Made with locally grown and organic ingredients.

Olives and Olive Oil—organic and directly from the grower in California.

Live plants—Fig trees and tomato plants.

Place your order from now until Tuesday at noon for pickup on Wednesday from 4-7 pm at Nightbird Books in Fayetteville.

If you aren’t able to place an order, stop by to shop with us on Wednesday. We will have a variety of items for sale from the table.

Hello!

We have a great selection of spring veggies for you this week, as well as an amazing selection of meats and other goodies from our other vendors. We still have plenty of greens of all kinds, as well as broccoli and the first summer squashes and zucchini.
The strawberries are on their way out, and there will be a limited selection. However, The Peach Truck is set up next to us now every week, so you will be able to get your fruit!

In farm news, we have sad news to report. Last week there was a devastating fire at Tally’s farm. Thankfully, no one was hurt and the house and her husband’s guitar building shop is fine. However, the barn with 12 years of worth of accumulated farm equipment and supplies, the delivery van, and her greenhouse was totally destroyed. The worst part was her dear family dog, Buddy, was also killed in the fire.
This is a very overwhelming loss, especially heading into the busiest time of the year. However, the loving kindness shown by the community has been truly healing! All of Tally’s family is very grateful for the support.

Because of the fire, the flower bouquets are being delayed another week. The walk0in cooler, which chilled the flowers and veggies after harvest, is gone due to the fire and that impacts the ability to do a good flower harvest. Hopefully, there will be a new system in place in the week ahead, and flowers bouquets can start next week. We appreciate your patience!

The vegetables available online do not reflect ALL the variety available at the outdoor market. So much more is available so make sure you visit the farmers tables when you stop by.

Check out the great selection of perennials available. They are hardy and propagated from plants grown in Arkansas for over 30 years. You can see photos of them at the outdoor market near the Market Welcome Station.

It’s that time of year…it’s music festival time, and you know how excited that makes your market manager! Time to cue up the 60s tunes, baby, because I blow out of town, this Thursday, for the beloved Jubilee Festival that I attend, each year!

I work hard, each and every day, and I work even harder, on this week, each year, JUST so I can hit the open road with my trusty gang of pals…destination, the gates of Maggie’s Farm…a weekend of Grateful Dead music, dancing, camping, forgetting everything, leaving it all behind.

It’s the weekend that revives me, reunites me with the people who love me, and rekindles my love of just being…just nothing, where my biggest decision is which stage I want to migrate to for which band. What cocktail I may want. What tapestry to hang in each spot of our tapestry lounge.

The gates of the Jubilee, and Maggie’s Farm are like going home, going up the country. The long lane is a welcoming feeling. The festival greeters welcome you to a weekend world of hippies, love, and brotherhood/sisterhood. It’s just groovy, man…

So, much like my beloved Maggie’s Farm experience, this market holds the same welcoming, love, and grooviness for us all.

I hope that I am able to bring that to our market as your manager. The love fest that I want out of life. The kindness, goodness, and local love.

This week, let this market help you go up country. Let it be your love fest. We have so much to love, right now!

We have seasonal goodness! Greens, lettuce, herbs, early garlic, STRAWBERRIES!!! We’ve got it all, arriving weekly!!!

ALFN Local Food Club:  Market Reminder


ALFN Members,

The market is open and full. As we transition into summer crops, our growers have a phenomenal diversity of products to choose from right now. From squash and zucchini to baby spinach and bok choy to mountain mint and mushrooms to strawberries and sweet potatoes, produce is overflowing. Back in the farm fridge and freezer, you can find giant duck eggs, green eggs, feta and halloumi cheeses, and diverse cuts of meat from buffalo, cow, chicken and lamb. Remember, the market has dozens of locally produced options for soaps, lotions, deodorants, and even spices and drinks. The breadth of ALFN’s market is remarkable…all locally initiated.

ALFN Dry Goods Pilot Project

I remember reading Barbara Kingsolver’s book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle years ago and enjoying the challenges her family encountered in one year only eating what was locally produced. Armstrong made a few concessions for some items such as coffee. These concessions provided a psychological and nutrient backstop for their eating needs. These kinds of concessions were integral elements of food economies in some ancient cultures. Before the industrial revolution, many agrarian societies traded with other regional peoples for goods that were not produced in their own region. Today, the expectations have reversed and the majority of western society receives goods made outside of their own region.

I can’t help but feel we have come a long way since Armstrong’s book. From the multiple farmers’ markets throughout Little Rock, to ALFN’s year round market, it is easy to eat the bulk of our food from local growers. However, many of us still find ourselves in the box grocery stores. We may run into another ALFN member and sheepishly grin. Some items you can’t get on ALFN’s market. I think this is a normal part of growing a local food economy, but I also think ALFN can continue to grow as a one-stop shop for our grocery needs.

For this reason, ALFN has decided to open a pilot project in dry goods such as grains and legumes. Through bulk suppliers such as Azure Standard, ALFN will provide some of the dry goods our recipes and eating traditions depend. Here are a few of the policies and details of the project:

  • We will never post items that local growers already supply. This is the most important policy. Our goal is to fill in the gaps, not create additional competition with our growers.
  • Dry Good items will be offered as a pre-order item. Once we receive enough orders for half a shipment, we will finalize the order, pick it up and let you know when you can pick it up.
  • We will offer a normal weight amount and a larger bulk amount for every item offered.
  • All the dry goods will be organic.
  • Our prices will compete with the bulk bins of grocery stores such as Whole Foods. (We’ve been price comparing to make sure this would be a cheaper option)

Starting this week, you can find five new items under the section entitled Dry Goods. For this pilot project, we are offering organic black beans, red quinoa, whole wheat flour, steel-cut oats, and long grain brown rice. Orders will be taken for the next couple of weeks with a target shipment to be after June 15th. If this pilot project is successful, we will be able to maintain some stock and provide a quicker turnaround for pre-orders.

We are interested in doing anything we can do to bolster our local food economy. By providing bulk grains and legumes, we hope to foster a local market that can be a one-stop shop for local consumers. Please give me your feedback as we test this project. Good afternoon!
We are very excited to welcome a new Grower to our CLG family. Kevin and Kimberly Growns are the hardworking folks producing healthy food at their family place in Perry County. Learn more about KMG Farms using the OUR GROWERS tab at top of the page. They have meats listed right now, and will have organic vegetables soon. They grow organically , but are not yet officially certified organic.

Most items are listed by 6pm Sunday, but check back again before the market closes Tuesday night to see if any other items are ready to be harvested for you! Eat fresh! Eat local! Eat for better health!
